Jackson Boulevard Chicago May 1959. Its a smoky, hazy downtown area, with a rail track, though strangely serene in this image. I think the shot was snapped because of the hanging baskets of flowers. How easy it is to appreciate this city scene without the visual noise and advertising you’d find there today. Its helpful having a street sign (right foreground) which tells us that this is East Jackson Boulevard. West Jackson Boulevard – the other end I presume – was officially declared a historic district in the late 1970’s.
I’ve kept the warm, washed out color of the original because I feel that’s where the atmosphere comes from. But I improved the tones and removed some damage.
